It’s not often you come across such a rare and exciting event- let alone be part of it! On Thursday 15th June, l’Imperatrice will be putting together a wine dinner featuring one of Burgundy’s most renowned estates: Domaine Sylvain Cathiard.
The estate was started with a small plot of Vosne Romanée by Alfred Cathiard in 1930, who had already gained significant experience working at Domaine Romanee Conti and Lamarche. Alfred expanded his holdings tactfully over the following years along with his son Andre, however these grapes were mainly sold out to negociants. In 1995, Alfred’s grandson Sylvain took over the estate upon his father Andre’s retirement on a rental agreement. The estate continued to grow, with the acquisition of a small parcel of 0.43ha Nuit St Georges 1er Cru Aux Thorey in 2006. In the late 2000’s Sebastien joined his father working at the estate, with the 2011 vintage being the first he had full control of.
The vines of this estate are given meticulous care. After fermentation the 1er cru and Grand cru wines go into 100% new oak barrels, most of which are made by the cooper Rémond.
Barrels of Nuits St Georges at the Cathiard Estate
Nuits St Georges 1er Cru Murgers 0.48h
– These old vines are about 65 years old and consistently give small berries, which allow the density of flavour to be shown in the resulting wine. The wine carries the body expected of a Nuits St Georges, however the vineyard sits close to the border with Vosne Romanee, which does not go unnoticed in the wines.
Vosne Romanee 1er Cru Les Suchots 0.16ha
– The smallest 1er cru holding of the estate, produces a rich and powerful wine with a hauntingly long finish. Commonly recognised as an exceptional wine, Cathiard’s holding is considered at the top end of those produced.
Vosne Romanee 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts 0,74ha
– The staple wine of the estate. The exceptional persitance and incredible depth of flavour of this wine leaves it almost on a par with the Romanee St Vivant. A wine of power, muscle and mineral infused flavours.
Romanee St Vivant Grand Cru 0.17ha
– The soil of this vineyard is rich in clay and active chalk. The Cathiard’s plot lies at the southern end, beyond Romanee Conti’s. A harmonious wine which elegantly expresses the incredible quality of fruit.
This rare opportunity will compare two vintages from four of the finest wines made by one of Burgundy’s most famous producers. We will begin the evening with the Nuits Murgers, and finish with the incredibly rare Romanee St Vivant, of which only three barrels are made every year and which has become even more expensive than Domaine de la Romanee Conti’s Romanee St Vivant!
